Head Coach Gina Procaccio To Be Inducted to Penn Relays Wall of Fame
As she prepares her Villanova student-athletes for the 121st running of the Penn Relays this week, Wildcats head coach Gina Procaccio is receiving due recognition for her career achievements as both an athlete and a head coach. Procaccio was inducted into the Delaware County Athletes Hall of Fame on Sunday night and will also be inducted to the Penn Relays Wall of Fame this week.
Katherine Petruzzellis in Second Place After First Day of Penn Relays Heptathlon
The 121st running of the Penn Relays is officially underway, as the first four events of the heptathlon were contested on Tuesday afternoon. Villanova senior Katherine Petruzzellis (Annandale, N.J.) is in second place with a score of 3,140 points at the close of competition on Tuesday. The final three events of the heptathlon will take place on Wednesday, beginning with the long jump at 10:30 a.m.
Wildcats Win Pair of Events on Final Day of Larry Ellis Invitational
A dozen athletes wrapped up competition for Villanova at the Larry Ellis Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The day was a strong one for the Wildcats, who registered a pair of first place finishes at the meet. Sophomore Caitlin Bungo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won the 3000 meters and senior Kathleen McPhillips (Carlisle, Pa.) finished first in the pole vault.
Wildcats Compete in Four Events on First Night of Larry Ellis Invitational
There were eight athletes in competition for Villanova at the Larry Ellis Invitational on Friday night. Two days of competition at Weaver Stadium opened with the Wildcats competing in two running and two throwing events. Freshman Erin Jaskot (Blauvelt, N.Y.) recorded a personal best time of in the 1500 meters and senior Abigail Freitag (Bridgeton, N.J.) established a personal best in the javelin.
Middle Distance Runners Have Success at Hurricane Alumni Invitational
A dominant performance in the 800 meters and a second straight school record in the 4x100 meter relay highlighted an exciting day of competition for Villanova, which competed in the Hurricane Alumni Invitational at Cobb Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Senior middle distance runner Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) recorded a personal best time in the 800 meters as the Wildcats swept the top three spots in the race.
Wildcats Win a Pair of Events at Delaware Open
Redshirt freshman Alexandra Russo (Bellport, N.Y.) led a Villanova sweep of the top four finishing spots in the 1500 meters and sophomore Caroline Hamilton (Nottingham, Pa.) finished first in the javelin at the Delaware Open on Saturday afternoon. Those results highlighted the results for the Wildcats in the local meet at Grant Stadium, where the team had 17 athletes in action in six running events and five field events.
Wildcats Set School Record in 4x100 Meter Relay, Win Team Title at Colonial Relays
Junior sprinter Shanice Grant (Kingston, Jamaica) won the 100 meter hurdles and also was part of a school record performance in the 4x100 meter relay as Villanova easily captured the team title at the Colonial Relays on Saturday afternoon. Two-plus days of competition at Zable Stadium concluded with the Wildcats scoring 148 team points in the meet, more than double the total of any other team.
Shanice Grant Records Pair of Career Bests at Colonial Relays
On a full day of action at the Colonial Relays, junior sprinter Shanice Grant (Kingston, Jamaica) was the top performer for Villanova at Zable Stadium on Friday afternoon. Grant recorded personal best performances in both the 100 meter hurdles and the 200 meters and also moved up on the Wildcats all-time performance lists in each event. Villanova registered a total of four first-place finishes on Friday, with the meet set to continue on Saturday morning.
