Wildcats Earn All-BIG EAST Honors In 12 Different Events
The listing of All-BIG EAST honors from last week's conference championships was announced on Friday morning and Villanova had athletes recognized in 12 different events. The top three finishers in each of the 20 different events that make up the BIG EAST Championships garner all-conference accolades. This is only the third time ever that the Wildcats have recorded All-BIG EAST performances in a dozen or more events.
Piccirillo, Schappert and Distance Medley Relay Squad Headed to NCAA Championships
The selected entries for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships have been announced and Villanova had two individuals qualify for the national meet in the Mile, in addition to earning a spot in the distance medley relay. Senior Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) and junior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) are each individual qualifiers for the national championships. The NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held on March 13-14 at Randal Tyson Track in Fayetteville, Ark.
Petruzzellis Named Most Outstanding Field Performer as Wildcats Win BIG EAST Title
At the BIG EAST Indoor Track & Field Championships this weekend, Villanova won eight different events and captured the team title at the conference meet for the second straight year. This is the conference-record 14th team title overall for the Wildcats, who scored 176 points and won by a 42.5-point margin over the other seven conference teams.
Petruzzellis Sets School Record, Wins Pentathlon on First Night at BIG EAST Championships
Senior multi-event standout Katherine Petruzzellis (Annandale, N.J.) broke a long-standing school record in the pentathlon and became the Wildcats first-ever conference champion in the event at the New York Armory on Saturday night. Senior pole vaulter Alexandra Wasik (Medina, Ohio) won her second consecutive BIG EAST title in her signature event and Villanova leads the team standings after the first night of competition at the conference championships. The meet concludes on Sunday afternoon.

Throughout the 32-year history of the indoor BIG EAST Track & Field Championships, no program has come close to rivaling the level of success that Villanova has achieved at the conference meet. The defending champion Wildcats have won an astounding 13 team titles at the indoor BIG EAST meet and have also captured 142 individual event titles over the years. No other team has garnered more than seven team titles or won more than 63 individual events.
Stephanie Schappert Earns BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Award
Senior middle distance runner Stephanie Schappert (Delray Beach, Fla.) was honored by the BIG EAST as an Insitutional Scholar-Athlete of the Year in an announcement made by the conference office last week. Each member institution in the BIG EAST has one male and one female student-athlete recognized with this award, which comes with a $2,000 scholarship which can be applied to postgraduate or professional studies. The award recipients are chosen by the BIG EAST Academic Affairs Committee.
Piccirillo Shatters Personal Best Time in Mile with Big Race at Iowa State
In one of the best individual races of her career, junior Angel Piccirillo (Homer City, Pa.) shattered her previous personal best time in the Mile and recorded a new mark of 4:34.28 at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday afternoon. Piccirillo ran in the elite section of the event on the 300-meter track and came in second out of 11 runners in her race, which included top collegiate runners along with several professional athletes.
Seven Wildcats Record Personal Best Times at Valentine Invitational
Seven different athletes set personal best times in their respective events at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at the Track & Tennis Center on Friday afternoon. The highlight of those results came from senior Varonica Johnson (Charlotte, N.C.), who set a school record in the 60 meters with a personal best time of 7.57. Villanova had a total of 28 athletes in competition in the meet.
