Women's Tennis Concludes Fall Play

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's tennis team has concluded another successful fall season of competition. The team competed in four events, including the TCNJ Fall Kickoff, the Bucknell Tournament, a match against Delaware and the Old Dominion Tournament. The series of fall events served as a preview and chance to participate in quality competition as the team prepares for their Spring 2010 season. TCNJ Fall Kickoff, Sept. 11-13: In the TCNJ Fall Kickoff, Courtney Reed, Kristin Gobberg and Allie Harding defeated their TCNJ competition in singles matchups. Singles competition: Jackie Shtemberg (The College of New Jersey) def. Carla Erskine (Villanova University) 6-3, 6-0. Courtney Reed (Villanova University) def. Stefanie Haar (The College of New Jersey) 4-6, 6-3, 11-9. Felice Trinh (The College of New Jersey) def. Allison Solberg (Villanova University) 7-5, 6-4. Kristin Gobberg (Villanova University) def. Paige Aiello (The College of New Jersey) 6-2, 6-4. Karisse Bendijo (The College of New Jersey) def. Emily Urda (Villanova University) 6-1, 6-2. Lauren Balsamo (The College of New Jersey) def. Michele Jordan (Villanova University) 6-4, 2-6, 10-3. Allie Harding (Villanova University) def. Emily Petersack (The College of New Jersey) 6-0, 6-2. Allison Tierney (The College of New Jersey) def. Katherine Monari (Villanova University) 6-4, 6-3. Bucknell Invitational, Sept. 18-20: In flight "A" singles, Carla Erksine fell to Zoe Taylor from Hofstra, 6-2, 6-1. After two byes she then faced Demi Iepuras from Bucknell, but fell 6-4, 6-2. Courtney Reed advanced after defeating Rachel McGowan from Duesquene, 6-2, 6-3, but lost to Bucknell's Lauren Lucido, 7-6, 6-0. She fell 6-2, 0-6, (10-5) to Chelsea Johnson. Allison Solberg dropped a close set to Zina Williams of Duquesen, 5-7, 6-2, (10-6). She advanced by defeating Loyola's Kerri Swan 6-4, 1-6, (10-7) before dropping a match to Lauren Clinton of Hofstra, 6-2, 6-1. In flight "B" singles, Kristin Gobberg fell in a close match with Courtney Casey from Bucknell, 7-5, 1-6, (10-8), but defeated Scarlet Hoy from Loyola, 7-6, 6-3 before dropping a contest to Christie Gattelaro (Hofstra), 6-0, 6-2. Michele Jordan defeated Carly Landini of Mount St. Mary's 6-4, 1-6, (10-8) before falling to Duquesne's Megan O'Sullivan, 7-5, 6-0. Allie Harding earned fifth place in flight "C" singles with a bye in round one before falling to Hofstra's Sonia Tay, 6-1, 6-2. She then defeated Loyola's Stephanie Dunn 6-1, 6-2 and Jackie Lionetta 6-1, 4-6, (10-5) to take fifth place. Elizabeth Spelman dropped a 6-1, 6-1 contest to Dunn in round one and fell 3-6, 6-1, (10-3) on the other side of the bracket. Kate Monari was defeated by Brooke Sailor from Hofstra 6-1, 3-6, (10-4) and fell in a close match to Steph Novakowski (Hofstra) 0-6, 6-2, (10-7). Wesleight Donadio placed third in flight "D" singles after winning her first match against Dana Verona of Loyola, 3-6, 6-3, (10-4). She fell 6-4, 3-6, (10-6) to Emily Grugan of Mount St. Mary's before defeating teammate Sarah Kelly 8-4 to take third place. Kelly won her first match 6-2, 7-5 against Mount St. Mary's Emma Haley, but fell 6-4, 6-4 to Liz Larkin of Bucknell. vs. Delaware, Sept. 26: On September 26th, the Wildcats hosted the Blue Hens of Delaware at the Villanova Tennis Complex in each teams' first dual match of the 2009-2010 season. Villanova fell 7-0 to Delaware in the contest.
In doubles competition:
Old Dominion Tournament, Oct. 2-4: At the Old Dominion Collegiate Invitational, both the men's and women's tennis team competed against some of the best collegiate players from around the nation. In flight "A" doubles, the team of Hilali/Unkaya def. Erskine/Solberg 8-2 in the consolation semi-finals. In flight "B-1" singles, Alexa Sebia def. Kristin Gobberg 8-1 in round 1 of consolation games, while Allie Harding def. Nekesa Thomas 8-0. In flight "B" doubles, Kristin Gobberg and Courtney Reed def. the team of Brooks/Foster, 8-3, in consolation semi-finals. They also won their first round match over Lovdal/Stanimirovic, 9-7. In flight "D" doubles, Monari/Spelman def. Dias/Suriben, 9-8 (5) in consolation quarterfinals. In flight "B-2" singles, Sonia Tsay def. Allison Solberg, 8-4 in the first round of play, while in flight "D-2", Alexandra Landers def. Kate Monari 7-5, 6-3 in the semi-finals.
