VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The Villanova women’s tennis team is set to begin fall play this weekend with a trip to Bucknell for the Bison Invitational. The Bison Invitational is set begin on Friday, Sept. 15 and run through Sunday, Sept. 18.
The Wildcats participated in the Bucknell Fall Invitational to open their fall season last year, advancing to the championship round in four events (two doubles and two singles matches). A pair of doubles teams and one singles player edged the competition in the championship match to end the invitational.
Last season, the team finished 10-17 overall and 3-3 in the BIG EAST. The Wildcats earned a trip to the BIG EAST Championships where they fell to Georgetown in the back draw, 4-0
The Wildcats are coached by Steven Reiniger who enters his 21st season at the helm of the program. Seniors, Victoria Martinez, Alex Krogius, and Paulina Bajet were named captains of this year’s squad in the offseason. The team will return 11 while adding three freshmen to the roster. “We have three strong freshmen, who should bolster our line-up and give us depth in both singles and doubles. From the get go, the team has blended together very well. We have very strong leadership from our seniors and have increased the talent with our new players.” Said Reiniger.
2017-18 Schedule: After Bucknell, the Wildcats will participate in the Saint Joseph’s Invite on Sept. 29 through Oct. 1. They will round out the fall season with a trip to Drexel as part of the Drexel Invitational on the weekend of Oct. 6
Villanova will return to action for their spring slate on Feb. 2 at the Bryn Mawr Racquet Club when they face off against Colgate.
