April 23, 2014
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Thursday at 10 a.m. marks the beginning of the journey for the Villanova women's tennis team as the seeds for the BIG EAST Championship have been announced. The tournament is set to take place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. and the Wildcats draw a No. 9 seed as they seek their first conference title in program history.
First serve comes against No. 8 seed Providence in the first round of the tournament. The winner advances to the quarterfinals where No. 1 DePaul awaits the following morning.
The Wildcats capped off the regular season on a high note fueled by a 5-2 win over Chestnut Hill on their home court. Boasting a 5-16 record during the year, Villanova hopes to use its recent momentum to catapult them to success in the tournament.
The Friars wrapped up the regular season 5-15 overall and 1-5 during conference action. The only triumph came against the Wildcats, 6-1 earlier in the month. Villanova struggled versus its conference foe with Mikelle Mancini earning the only victory from the No. 1 flight.
Last season, the Wildcats earned a No. 15 seed in the postseason before being bounced early by powerhouse USF and old rival Cincinnati.
