Rain Shortens Play at Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational
Oct. 7, 2012
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--The final day of the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational was shortened due to rain at the Huntington Valley Tennis Center on Sunday and the truncated schedule concluded a strong fall season for Villanova, which played in three tournaments over the past three weekends.
Freshman Tori Smyth (Stamford, Conn.) and senior Wesleigh Donadio (Winter Park, Fla.) advanced to the semifinals of the Flight A and Flight D singles draws, respectively. Each of their opponents moved on to the championship matches of those brackets via walkovers.
In the three tournaments it played this fall Villanova posted an overall winning record in both singles and doubles matches. The team went 18-13 (.581) in doubles during the fall season and was also 31-28 (.525) against singles opponents.
Smyth led the team with six wins in singles and finished the fall season with a 6-3 record. She was also 5-4 in doubles and teamed with fellow first-year player Allison Kuse (Marietta, Ga.) to win the doubles championship at the Bucknell Invitational. Smyth and Mancini individually reached the quarterfinals in the Flight 1 singles draw at the Saint Joseph's Invitational.
Another bright spot for the fall season was the play of Donadio, who had a team-best 8-2 record in doubles action. She and freshman Hayley Sanzone (Redding, Conn.) teamed up to win the Flight 4 doubles title at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational this past weekend.
Villanova opens the spring season on February 2 with a morning indoor match at Navy.
