Oct. 6, 2012
NEWPORT NEWS, Va.--Villanova won eight matches total and had two players advance to the semifinals in their respective brackets on Saturday at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Invitational, where competition in four singles draws got underway at the Huntington Valley Tennis Center. Freshman Tori Smyth (Stamford, Conn.) and senior Wesleigh Donadio (Winter Park, Fla.) advanced to the semifinals in the Flight A and Flight D brackets, respectively.
Smyth opened up with a tiebreaking win over Natalya Kamenschchikova of Chowan and advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 6-2, 3-6 (10-6) decision. Smyth reached the semifinals with a straight sets victory (6-2, 6-1) over Marcela Rosales from Drexel. In the semifinals on Sunday morning Smyth will take on Katelyn Stokes from Howard.
In the Flight D draw Donadio had a bye in the first round and won her quarterfinal match against Jodi Noland from Christopher Newport. She swept Noland by scores of 6-3 and 6-1 and will face Berri Flood from Mary Washington in the semifinal round.
Seven of the eight players that were in action for the Wildcats on Saturday came away with at least one victory. In the Flight A bracket junior Mikelle Mancini (Salt Lake City, Utah) tallied a 6-3, 6-1 win over Alex Bell from Drexel but was eliminated in the quarterfinals in a close match against Umarah Mighnee from Howard. That match went to a tiebreaker and Mighnee eventually rallied for the win. Mancini won the opening set 6-3 and Mighnee tied the match by taking the second set by the same 6-3 margin. The score of the tiebreaker that Mighnee won was unavailable.
Sophomore Sydney West (Washington, D.C.) was the lone Villanova player in the Flight B draw and she outlasted Maya Hicks from George Mason in the first round to post a tiebreaking win. West rallied after losing the opening set, 7-6, and recorded a 6-2 win in the second set to tie the match. The score of the tiebreaker was not available but the win moved West on to a quarterfinal match against Gabrielle Moxey from Howard. Moxey won that match by a 6-1, 6-4 count.
In the Flight C bracket freshmen Allison Kuse (Marietta, Ga.) and Hayley Sanzone (Redding, Conn.) each won their first match. Kuse cruised past Kim Morrissett of Christopher Newport in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) and Sanzone delivered a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (no tiebreaker score available) victory against Anna Richman from Mary Washington.
