Wildcats Claim Four Singles Matches on Second Day of SJU Fall Invitational
Oct. 2, 2011
PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--Sophomore Amanda Nelson (Sudbury, Mass.) and freshman Sydney West each won their opening matches in the Flight 2 singles draw and Villanova claimed four wins overall on the second day of competition at the SJU Fall Invitational, played at the Maguire and Finnesey courts at Saint Joseph's throughout the day on Saturday. The tournament concludes on Sunday and play resumes at 9 a.m. with the remaining matches to be played.
There were two Wildcats playing in each of four singles draws and the Flight 2 bracket is where Villanova had its most success. West opened with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory over Laura Matz of the host Hawks and then matched up against Tristany Leikem of Rhode Island in the quarterfinals. In a very close match West lost in a tiebreaker by a final score of 6-4, 4-6, 10-8.
Nelson won in straight sets against Lucy Bass from Lafayette in her first match, finishing with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. She was then defeated 6-4, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Flight 2 bracket by Marcela Rosales of Drexel.
The other two individual victories for the Wildcats came in consolation bracket play in flights three and four, respectively. In the Flight 3 draw, freshman Kate Pettee and senior Alexandra Harding (Westhampton, N.Y.) both played very strong matches against their opponents before ultimately falling by the slimmest of margins. Pettee was beaten by Alex Bell of Drexel by a count of 6-7 (4), 6-2, 10-6. In the consolation bracket she easily defeated Nicole Esposito (Saint Joseph's) by a 6-1, 6-1 score. Harding lost her opening match to Kelly Mulquin (Saint Joseph's) 6-7 (6), 6-1, 10-3.
Sophomore Anne Cognetti (Waverly, Pa.) bounced back from a three-set loss to Mel Reyes (Drexel) in Flight 4 and blanked Michele Vona (Saint Joseph's) 6-0, 6-0 in the consolation bracket.
Villanova also played its final two doubles matches of the weekend in action on Saturday morning. West and sophomore Mikelle Mancini (Salt Lake City, Utah) lost in the Flight 1 semifinals to Zeynep Mafa and Rosales by an 8-5 margin. In the consolation matches in Flight 2, Harding and Cognetti fell by an 8-6 score to Lucy Bass and Alison Dally (Lafayette).
