Wildcats Score Six Singles Wins on Second Day of Saint Joseph's Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--Action got underway in each of four singles draws at the Saint Joseph's Invitational on Saturday and Villanova picked up six wins for the day at the Maguire and Finnesey courts. The weekend tournament concludes with both singles and doubles matches being played on Sunday morning and afternoon.
Junior Mikelle Mancini (Salt Lake City, Utah) and freshman Tori Smyth (Stamford, Conn.) each won their opening round matches in the Flight 1 singles bracket to advance to the quarterfinals. Mancini outlasted Jocelyn Lu of Pittsburgh in a tiebreaker for a 6-4, 4-6, 10-9 victory and Smyth won in straight sets over Zeynep Mafa from Drexel, 6-2 and 6-4. Both players from the Wildcats were defeated by opponents from Delaware in the quarterfinals, with Mancini losing to Danea Jonjic (6-3, 6-2) and Smyth falling to Dorothy Safron (6-0, 6-1).
In the Flight 2 singles draw freshmen Hayley Sanzone (Redding, Conn.) and Allison Kuse (Marietta, Ga.) were each defeated in the first round. Sanzone fell to Kristina Eisenbrand of Saint Joseph's in straight sets, 6-2, and 6-0, while Gabrielle Catanzariti of Pittsburgh swept Kuse by identical scores of 6-3 and 6-3.
Sanzone and senior Wesleigh Donadio (Winter Park, Fla.) won matches in the consolation bracket of the Flight 2 draw. Donadio, who lost a play-in round match in Flight 2 on Friday afternoon, rebounded to defeat Lucy Bass of Lafayette in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) in the consolation first round. She will now face Karma Parbhu from Pittsburgh in a second round consolation match on Sunday starting at 11:30 a.m.
Freshman Yalda Hajavi (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Aurora McQuade (Great Falls, Va.) each split two matches in the Flight 3 and Flight 4 singles brackets, respectively. Hajavi opened up with a first round win over Alyssa McAndrew of Bucknell in a tiebreaker and earned a 6-2, 1-6, 10-8 victory. In the quarterfinals she was defeated by Alex Bell from Drexel in another tiebreaker. Bell eventually won by scores of 6-1, 4-6 and 10-6.
McQuade defeated Jenna Procyk from the tournament host Hawks in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) in the first round of the Flight 4 draw but lost a close match in the quarterfinals to Camila Diaz from St. Francis (Pa.). In one of the better matches played on Saturday, Diaz rallied past McQuade to post a 4-6, 6-2, 12-10 victory.
Two matches are scheduled for Villanova on Sunday morning and Donadio will be involved in both of them. In addition to playing in the second round of the Flight 2 consolation draw she and Mancini are also scheduled to play in the second round of the Flight 1 doubles consolation bracket against McAndrew and Lydia Colvin from Bucknell.
