Donadio and Mancini Pick Up Lone Doubles Win For Wildcats on Friday

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--The first day of action is complete at the Saint Joseph's Invitational and Villanova picked up one victory in doubles play on Friday afternoon. Senior Wesleigh Donadio (Winter Park, Fla.) and junior Mikelle Mancini (Salt Lake City, Utah) won in the consolation draw of the Flight 1 doubles bracket after losing in the first round of the main draw. This weekend's tournament at the Maguire and Finnesey courts continues on Saturday and wraps up on Sunday afternoon.
In the first round of the Flight 1 doubles bracket Donadio and Mancini were defeated by Danea Jonjic and Nataliya Naumova of Delaware, 8-4. In the first round of the consolation draw however, Donadio and Mancini bounced back and scored an 8-1 win over Amanda Kusnierz and Caroline Nixon from Lafayette. The second round of the consolation draw will be played on Saturday, with Donadio and Mancini scheduled to face Lydia Colvin and Alyssa McAndrew from Bucknell.
The freshmen duo of Allison Kuse (Marietta, Ga.) and Tori Smyth (Stamford, Conn.) also played in the first round of the top doubles draw and were defeated, 8-1, by Carman Lai and Dorothy Safron from the Blue Hens. In the consolation bracket first round Kuse and Smyth fell by an 8-4 count to Alex Bell and Emma Brook from Drexel.
Freshmen Yalda Hajavi (Bradenton, Fla.) and Hayley Sanzone (Redding, Conn.) played in the Flight 2 doubles bracket on Friday afternoon and were defeated in the opening round, 8-5, by Nicole Esposito and Arianne Polatnick from the host Hawks. In the first round of the consolation draw Hajavi and Sanzone fell by the same 8-5 final to Catherine Senopoulos and Ally Simels from Lafayette.
There was one singles match on the Friday schedule for the Wildcats and it was a play-in match for the Flight 2 singles draw. Donadio faced Shivani Patel from St. Francis (Pa.) and was defeated in straight sets by scores of 6-4 and 6-1.
Villanova will begin play on Saturday morning in the first round of the Flight 1, 3 and 4 singles brackets. The only remaining doubles match the Wildcats are still scheduled for is the second round consolation match in Flight 1 doubles that Donadio and Mancini will play in.
