Women's Tennis Overpowers Lafayette

Easton, Pa. - On Thursday, Sept. 27, the Villanova women's tennis team notched their first victory of the 2001 season dismantling the Lafayette Leopards in a non-league match-up. The Wildcats received stellar play from their entire starting line-up sweeping the Leopards in both singles and doubles action. Taking over at No. 1 singles, senior Ashley Young led the Wildcats by defeating Lafayette's Monika Serrano in three sets, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Fellow senior Julie Darne and sophomore Jessie Rybacki were victorious as well for the 'Cats winning straight set matches in the next two singles positions. Courtney Flezzani and Kelly McAndrew, playing at their respective No. 4 and 5 slots, both added to their season victory totals with identical 6-2, 6-4 scores. Junior Jen Zick rounded out the Villanova line-up defeating Lafayette's Katie Gibbons in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. In doubles action, Darne and McAndrew took home their third win of the season at the top doubles spot. Young and Rybacki teamed up at No. 2 doubles by shutting out their opponent en route to an 8-0 victory. Rounding out play for the 'Cats, Flezzani and Zick out-matched Lafayette's Susan King and Lisa Sayed with an 8-1 score. With the victory, the Wildcats now stand at 1-0 on the season.
Villanova will return to action Saturday afternoon, Sept. 29, when they travel to the Bronx, N.Y. to take on the Fordham Rams at 1:00 P.M.
