Complete Results and Updated Brackets Through Saturday
LEWISBURG, Pa.--On a day that featured no shortage of successful performances for Villanova one of the top efforts for the team at the Bucknell Invitational came from freshman Tori Smyth (Stamford, Conn.), who advanced to the championship matches in the top singles draw as well as in the top doubles bracket along with fellow freshman Allison Kuse (Marietta, Ga.). The second of three days of competition took place at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon. As a team the Wildcats won a total of 12 singles matches and two doubles matches during the day. Of the 12 wins in singles action five came in the main draws of the three flights being played.
Smyth is playing in the Flight 1 singles bracket and she won quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Saturday to advance to the championship match of the tournament. She surrendered just two games total in her matches on Saturday after beating Jen Bush of Bucknell (6-0, 6-0) in the quarterfinal round and Maria Cioffi of the Bison in the semifinals (6-2, 6-0). In the championship match Smyth will face yet another Bucknell opponent in Elena Vidrascu, who eliminated Villanova junior Mikelle Mancini (Salt Lake City, Utah) in the semifinals by way of a 6-3, 6-2 decision.
In the Flight A doubles bracket Smyth and Kuse continued their dominance with an 8-2 semifinal victory over Samantha Pinchoff and Kelly Conroy of Mount St. Mary's. The Wildcats pair is now set to face Bush and Steph Pino of the Bison in the championship doubles match.
One title in the tournament was already secured by Villanova in Saturday's matches, as senior Wesleigh Donadio (Winter Park, Fla.) and freshman Hayley Sanzone (Redding, Conn.) captured the Flight B doubles draw with an 8-6 decision in the finals. They held off Merideth Rock and Kelsey Wahainen to garner the win.
Kuse and Sanzone each won all three matches they were involved in on Saturday, as both scored a pair of singles victories in the Flight 2 draw to go with their wins in doubles play. Kuse has reached the title match in the Flight 2 bracket after defeating Wahainen (6-1, 3-2 retired) and Carly Landini of Mount St. Mary's (6-3, 6-1) to reach the final. She will see Renee Deane of Mount St. Mary's with top honors in their flight at stake.
Sanzone, meanwhile, was playing in the back draw of the Flight 2 bracket after losing her opening match on Friday afternoon. She rebounded strong on Saturday and defeated Elizabeth Morgan of Bucknell (6-1, 6-0) and Rock (6-3, 6-2) to advance to the final match on the back side of the draw. She faces Ellie Fraser from the Bison on Sunday.
Sophomores Sydney West (Washington, D.C.) and Aurora McQuade (Great Falls, Va.) have advanced to the final matches in the back draws of the Flight 1 and Flight 3 singles brackets, respectively. West scored wins on Saturday over Kelsey Shea of Colgate (7-5, 3-6, 11-9) and Christie Schneider of Bucknell (6-2, 6-3). McQuade defeated Becky Silvers of Colgate (6-2, 6-3) and Alyssa Liples of Bloomsburg (6-2, 4-6, 10-7).
