Villanova Earnes a Singles and Doubles Championship at Bucknell Invitational

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova women's tennis team returned to action for day two of the Bucknell Invitational and came away with two championships Saturday afternoon. Mikelle Mancini was crowned the Orange Singles Draw Champion for her stellar play against the tournament's best competition. Connor Brewer teamed with Anne Cognetti to win the Doubles South Draw Championship over Bucknell's Melissa Parks and Jorie Fox, 8-4.
In the championship match, Mancini faced Bucknell's Maria Cloffi. After a first set shutout (6-0), Cloffi rebounded to take the second set (6-2). The team captain would buckle down in the tiebreaker to defeat Cloffi in an intense, 10-8, game. Mancini dominated Lizz Rossi of Mount St. Mary's, 6-0, 6-1, in the first round. The senior then went on to post a 6-2, 6-3, decision over Bloomburg's Maddie Graziani.
Freshman Samantha Schafer won her first match as a Wildcat when she swept past Bloomburg's Alda Diop, 6-0, 6-1, in the Orange Draw. She would fall in the next round to runner up Maria Cloffi.
Newcomer Nicole Coons was awarded runner up in the Blue Singles draw after falling to Bucknell's Steph Pino, 6-3, 6-0, in the championship match. Linley Busby defeated Bloomburg's Natalie Greenholt, 6-3, 6-3, in the Blue Singles back draw.
Freshman Brewer would impress in her first collegiate singles tournament of her career. Brewer was the runner-up of the White Singles draw after owning Mount St. Mary's Kelly Smith (6-4, 6-2) and Bucknell's Melissa Parks (6-1, 6-2). She would drop the championship match, 6-2, 6-2, to Bucknell's Urbinati.
After dropping her first match in the White Singles draw, Allison Kuse would rebound in the back draw and handle Bloomburg's Alyssa Liples, 6-1, 6-0.
In her first action in the collegiate ranks, Gianna Mitchell would play an outstanding tournament, finishing runner-up of the Gray Singles draw. She blanked Bloomburg's Meredith Endy (6-0, 6-0), in her first match as a Wildcat. The freshman then went onto defeat Mount St. Mary's Jenny Smith in a back and forth, 7-6, 7-5, decision. Sophomore Hanley Sanzone won her first match against Lindsay Tennis of Bloomburg, 6-1, 6-2, before falling in the second round.
Linley Busby would team with Samantha Shafer to win the Doubles North Back draw championship. The duo bounced back after a first set defeat to beat Bloomburg's Graziani and Liples, 8-3, before dominating Mount St. Mary's Rossi and Benefiel, 8-2.
Mancini and Kuse would win their first match in doubles action, 8-1, before falling in the second round of the Doubles North draw.
