Opening Day a Successful One For Wildcats at Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa.--The first tournament of the fall season for Villanova is off to a strong start as the Wildcats went 6-1 in doubles matches and also scored four wins in singles play at the Bucknell Invitational on Friday afternoon. Villanova played in 15 matches overall during the first of three days of competition in three singles draws and two doubles brackets at the Varsity Tennis Courts.
The freshmen duo of Tori Smyth (Stamford, Conn.) and Allison Kuse (Marietta, Ga.) each played a hand in three victories for the Wildcats on Friday afternoon. They teamed together to win their first two matches in the Flight A doubles draw and individually scored victories in the first round of singles play as well.
In the first round of doubles action Smyth and Kuse delivered an 8-3 victory over Natalie Greenholt and Nicole Slagle of Bloomsburg, while in the quarterfinal round the Villanova pair edged Lydia Colvin and Alyssa McAndrew from the host Bison by an 8-6 score. They have now advanced to the semifinals in the top doubles bracket and will face Samantha Pinchoff and Kelly Conroy from Mount St. Mary's on Saturday.
Smyth and junior Mikelle Mancini (Salt Lake City, Utah) posted wins in the Flight 1 singles bracket. Smyth swept McAndrew in straight sets by scores of 6-0 and 6-1 and Mancini was similarly convincing in a 6-0, 6-2 win against Christie Schneider, also from Bucknell. Smyth and Mancini each move on to quarterfinal matches in their bracket.
In the Flight 2 singles draw Kuse outlasted Sam Maddnick of the Bison in a tiebreaker and won by scores of 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 to advance to the quarterfinals against Kelsey Wahainen of Colgate. Senior Wesleigh Donadio (Winter Park, Fla.) defeated Kristen Bishof of Bucknell in straight sets (6-2, 6-1) in the second singles flight and next plays Alexandra Lazarus from Colgate in the quarterfinal round.
Mancini and sophomore Sydney West (Washington, D.C.) won a Flight A doubles match by an 8-1 count against Michelle Perez and Aida Dip of Bloomsburg to advance to the quarterfinals, where they will take on Carly Landini and Liz Rossi from Mount St. Mary's on Saturday.
In the Flight B doubles bracket the tandem of Donadio and freshman Hayley Sanzone (Redding, Conn.) has advanced to the finals after consecutive wins on Friday afternoon. They opened up with an 8-3 win over Katie Grant and Jackie Finn of Colgate and next defeated Kristen Bishof and Ellie Fraser from the Bison by the same 8-3 final. In the finals of the Flight B bracket they will face Merideth Rock and Wahainen from the Red Raiders.
Freshman Yalda Hajavi (Bradenton, Fla.) and sophomore Aurora McQuade (Great Falls, Va.) won their first doubles match in the Flight B draw, 8-6, over Erin Reitenauer and Caitlin Flynn of Bloomsburg. In the semifinal round of the bracket they were defeated by an 8-4 score by Rock and Wahainen.
Villanova returns to the courts on Saturday morning to continue both singles and doubles play in the three singles and two doubles brackets. Results from all of the matches played on Saturday will be posted on Saturday night when play has concluded for the day.
