Villanova Women Come out on top at St. Joseph's, 5-2

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- Jumping ahead with wins at the first four singles, the Villanova women's tennis team bested the St. Joseph's Hawks (1-2) yesterday on the Finnesey Courts. The victory allowed the Wildcats a 1-0 start to their season. In singles action, Candice Carlin (No. 1), Colleen Speaker (No.2), Courtney Flessani (No.3) and Leighann Reilly (No.4) each won their matches in straight sets. Lindsey Puchyr battled to a three-set singles loss at No. 5, giving St. Joe's their lone singles victory. Wrapping up singles action at No. 6 was Taryn Cappellini, who came out a victory after a three-set contest. St. Joe's was victorious in two of the three doubles match, winning at No. 2 and No. 3. Candice Carlin and Leighann Reilly paired up for the No. 1 doubles victory over Nicole Morrison and Jess Swanderski. Michelle Savage and Erika Guers defeated the team of Taryn Cappellini and Katie Fleszar (No. 2), while Gina DiGiacomo and Marisa Donelson defeated Lindsey Puchyr and Morgan Flezzani at No. 3 doubles. The women return to action on Thursday, September 23rd when the host Millersville in their home opener at Villanova Tennis Complex. Match time is 3:00 PM.
