LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Villanova women's tennis team was off to a strong start as both doubles teams were victorious Friday when it opened its fall tournament schedule at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Pa.
"I'm pleased with the way our young players were able to handle the college atmosphere and game," Villanova head coach Steve Reiniger said. "We need to continue to have the same intensity we came out with today to sustain success."
Villanova entered two pairs into the doubles South Draw at Bucknell and both teams eased its way into Saturday unblemished.
Senior Anne Cognetti teamed with freshman Connor Brewer to sweep past Danielle Nguyen and Taylor D'Agostino of Mount St. Mary's, 8-1. The duo will take on Bloomsburg's Caitlin Flynn and Erin Reitenauer in the next round.
Sophomore Hayley Sanzone joined newcomer Gianna Mitchell to defeat Meredith Endy and Samantha Smith of Bloomsburg University, 8-3. The duet will battle against Bucknell's Melissa Parks and Jorie Fox tomorrow afternoon.
In the Blue Singles Draw, Nicole Coons advanced to the championship match against Bucknell's Steph Pino by winning her first two matches of the tournament in straight sets.
Coons handled Bloomsburg's Erin Reitenauer, 6-1, 6-3, in the first match of her collegiate career. The freshman would go on to defeat Taylor D'Agostino of Mount St. Mary's in an intense, 7-6, 7-6, match.
