Women's Tennis Impressive at Bloomsburg Invitational

Bloomsburg, Pa.--On Sept. 8th and 9th in the opening weekend of the 2001-02 season, the women's tennis team picked up right where they left off at the end of last season, looking impressive at the Bloomsburg Invitational in Bloomsburg, Pa. The Wildcats participated in the two-day round robin tournament that also included Quinnipiac University, Binghamton University and host Bloomsburg University.

On day one at the Invitational, nine different Wildcats posted first and second round victories, led by sophomore Erica Walter (Mount Laurel, NJ/ Bishop Eustace Prep) and freshman Courtney Flezzani (Pfafftown, NC/ R.J. Reynolds) who swept both of their matches on the afternoon. Walter defeated Binghamton's Amy Linda 6-4, 6-4 and Quinnipiac's Michelle Nagle, 7-5, 6-3 in the first and second rounds, respectively. Flezzani knocked off Binghamton's Kristin Jobe and Quinnipiac's Danielle Rautenberg in straight sets as well, 7-5, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-3.

Doubles action saw partners Courtney Flezzani and Jen Zick (Colts Neck, NJ/ St. John Vianney) victorious as they defeated Binghamton with an 8-5 score. Senior Liz Farrell (Warwick, NY/ Warwick Valley) and freshman Morgan Flezzani (Pfafftown, NC/ R.J. Reynolds) also found success over Binghamton picking up their first doubles win of the year, 8-2.

Day two saw the 'Cats continue their steady singles play as they took six of seven matches from the host Bloomsburg Huskies. Seniors Megan Lacroix (Columbus, OH/ Columbus School for Girls) and Liz Farell and sophomore Jessie Rybacki (Salisbury, MD/ Wicomico) all led the cause to lead the Wildcats. In doubles action, Villanova took three out of four matches from Binghamton but dropped four to Quinnipiac University.

Villanova will return to the courts on Tuesday, Sept. 12 when they will host their home opener against St. John's. Match time is set for 3:00 p.m.
