Wildcats Eliminated From BIG EAST Championship By No. 9 Seed Cincinnati

TAMPA, Fla. - In the consolation bracket at the BIG EAST Championship on Friday morning Villanova (6-15) saw its season come to an end in a 4-0 loss to Cincinnati (10-12) at the Andros Dorm Courts. In the victory the Bearcats won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches as well as the No. 3 through No. 5 singles matches to clinch the outcome.
The loss for the Wildcats ends a season in which Villanova displayed a great deal of promise throughout the lineup. During the regular season the Wildcats posted an overall winning record in doubles play and tallied 31 singles victories in dual matches.
In the match on Friday morning Cincinnati tallied 8-0 victories in each of the doubles matches that were completed. Freshman Allison Kuse (Marietta, Ga.) and sophomore Kate Pettee (New Canaan, Conn.) were defeated in the No. 2 doubles match, while senior Wesleigh Donadio (Winter Park, Fla.) and junior Anne Cognetti (Waverly, Pa.) lost at the No. 3 spot.
The clinching victory for the Bearcats came at No. 3 singles, where Ashleigh Witte defeated Kuse by set scores of 6-0 and 6-0. Pettee lost to Kelly Poggensee-Wei at No. 4 singles (6-0, 6-1) and Donadio was defeated by Hannah Wille (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 5 spot.
Donadio is the only senior on the Villanova roster and she led the team with 15 victories in doubles play this season. Freshman Tori Smyth (Stamford, Conn.) had a team-high 15 singles wins and finished the year with a 15-10 (.625) record, including nine wins in dual matches. She and junior Mikelle Mancini (Salt Lake City, Utah) also teamed up for eight doubles wins in dual matches.
