Wildcats Fall to No. 2 Seed USF, 4-0, in First BIG EAST Championship Match

TAMPA, Fla. - In the first round of the BIG EAST Championship on Thursday morning No. 15 seed Villanova (6-14) lost to No. 2 seed and host USF (13-7) at the Varsity Courts on the Bulls campus. The loss relegates the Wildcats to the consolation bracket in the tournament, where Villanova will take on No. 9 seed Cincinnati on Friday at 9 a.m. That match will be played at the Andros Dorm Courts. This is the first conference tournament appearance for the Wildcats since 2000.
USF started off the match by securing the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots. In singles action the Bulls closed out wins in the No. 4, No. 2 and No. 5 matches to clinch the team result. The No. 1 doubles match and the final three singles matches were not completed.
Freshman Allison Kuse (Marietta, Ga.) and sophomore Kate Pettee (New Canaan, Conn.) played at No. 2 doubles and were defeated by Fanny Fracassi and Paula Montoya by a final score of 8-2. In the No. 3 doubles match, senior Wesleigh Donadio (Winter Park, Fla.) and junior Anne Cognetti (Waverly, Pa.) lost to Alessandra Bonte and Kayla Rizzolo, 8-0.
The three singles matches to be completed features freshman Tori Smyth (Stamford, Conn.), Pettee and Donadio. Smyth lost to Loreto Alonso-Martinez in the No. 2 singles match by identical set scores of 6-1 and 6-1, while Pettee lost to Montoya (6-0, 6-0) at the No. 4 spot. The decisive point for the Bulls came from Bonte at No. 5 singles, where she posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Donadio.
With the win USF advances to a quarterfinal match against No. 10 seed Pittsburgh on Friday morning.
