Strong Doubles Play Helps Lead Wildcats to 4-3 Win at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. - After rolling through doubles play with easy wins in each of the three matches Villanova (5-7) won three of the first four singles matches to be completed and defeated Bucknell (5-8) by a final score of 4-3 at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Thursday afternoon. Freshman Tori Smyth (Stamford, Conn.) clinched the match with a win at the No. 2 singles spot while the duo of sophomore Sydney West (Washington, D.C.) and freshman Allison Kuse (Marietta, Ga.) each win their singles matches after earlier teaming for a win at No. 2 doubles.
With the Wildcats leading 1-0 after the doubles matches had been completed, Kuse was the first to finish her singles match and she defeated Jen Bush by set scores of 6-2 and 6-1. The team score was 2-1 after the Bison scored a win at No. 1 singles but West and Smyth then wrapped up their matches at the No. 3 and No. 2 spots, respectively, to secure the outcome.
Smyth held off Maria Cioffi (7-6, 7-6) at No. 2 singles and West defeated Lydia Colvin at the No. 3 spot (6-3, 7-6). Earlier in the afternoon West and Kuse had teamed up to beat Colvin and Stephanie Pino by an 8-2 margin in the No. 2 doubles match.
Junior Mikelle Mancini (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Smyth defeated Cioffi and Elena Vidrascu, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Senior Wesleigh Donadio (Winter Park, Fla.) and sophomore Kate Pettee (New Canaan, Conn.) were 8-2 winners over Bush and Sam Madnick in the No. 3 doubles match.
Villanova will have off until it's next home match, against Georgetown on Wednesday, April 3.
