PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Freshman Tori Smyth (Stamford, Conn.) won a tiebreaker in the No. 2 singles match to score the only point for Villanova (0-3) in a 6-1 loss to Pittsburgh (4-4) at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness Center on Saturday afternoon. The first two singles matches each went to a tiebreaker as Smyth and junior Mikelle Mancini (Salt Lake City, Utah) each continued their strong play this season.
Smyth won her opening set against Jocelyn Lu by a count of 6-3 but then dropped the second set by a 6-4 margin. She went on to win the tiebreaker, 10-7, to win her second singles match in three tries in dual competition. At the No. 1 singles position Mancini forced a tiebreaker against Taylor Washington before losing a narrow match 6-4, 6-7, 10-4.
Villanova is next in action when it takes on Point Loma Nazarene on March 2 at 1 p.m. Pacific time.
