Fairfield Edges Villanova

Stamford, Conn. - The Villanova (0-3) women's tennis team suffered its third loss the season when Fairfield University edged the Wildcats 4-3 Friday night at the Stamford Indoor Tennis Courts.
The Wildcats began the match with a one point advantage after claiming the doubles point when Samantha Schafer and Tori Smyth knocked off Ryan Sharissa and Allison Radde, 8-5, in the No. 2 doubles slot. The victory gave Villanova its first doubles victory of the season.
Hayley Sanzone eased her way to a 6-3, 6-4 win over Emma Samson at the No. 6 spot for the second point of the evening.
At the No. 5 position, Kate Pettee swept mast Karen McKeough 6-2, 7-5 for her first win of her collegiate career.
With Villanova leading 3-2, the Stags would come from behind and pickup wins at the top two slots and improve to 3-2 on the season. Fairfield took the match when Monica Yajima knocked off Mikelle Mancini 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 1 spot, which resulted in her first singles loss of the year.
The defeat marks the third loss of the season for the Wildcats. Villanova will travel to Calif. during spring break to play matches against Whittier, Vanguard and Point Loma Nazarene.
