Villanova, Pa. -- Head coach Maria DiBernardi in her final season, has announced the softball schedule for the upcoming 2018 season, which includes 19 home games at the Villanova Softball Complex.
"We have a very challenging schedule in and out of conference. We have a young pitching staff and we need to be ready for the challenge. I think we are deep in a lot of positions and I think our offense and defense are strong but our pitching staff will be tested this year so they will have to put up a strong performance if we are going to have a chance of having a good season." DiBernardi said.
Villanova is coming off an impressive season in 2017 that saw the team go 35-20 and qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament.
The team opens the 2018 campaign in Madeira Beach, Florida for the fourth consecutive season as part of the Madeira Beach Invitational from Feb. 23-Mar. 4. The Wildcats will play Marist, McNeese State, Arkansas, Nicholls State, Kent State, University Incarnate Word, Alabama State, SIUE, Central Arkansas and Loyola at the tournament.
After a short break, the team will return to action March 9-11 at the USF Under Armour Showcase in Clearwater, Fla. Villanova is set to square off against Army, USF, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, and Chattanooga.
The Wildcats then will go to play at the Blue Hen Classic in Delaware from March 17-18 as they face Cornell, and host Delaware. The team makes a brief stop double header at Delaware State on March 20 and at Rider on March 22.
Villanova's first home contests and BIG EAST matchups of the year will be on Saturday, March 24 in a doubleheader against Butler.
The team will then travel to Philadelphia as they face La Salle on March 27. Then the Wildcats will then continue on the road as they face BIG EAST rival DePaul on March 30-31. The team will return home on April 3 to face Drexel. The wildcats then face Penn at home on April 4 and then return to BIG EAST play at home against St. John's on April 7-8.
The Wildcats will then host Lafayette on April 11 for a doubleheader against the Leopards, and then travel to Providence for a series against the Friars from April 14-15. Villanova comes back to the Main Line for a doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson on April 17, before heading to Morgan State on April 18 to take on the Bears.
Then the Wildcats head home to face Georgetown in a doubleheader on April 21 and then again on April 22. The Wildcats then will travel to Lehigh on April 25 before heading home to face Seton Hall on April 28-29.
Villanova's last non-conference regular season game is against Monmouth in a doubleheader on May 2.
The Wildcats close out the regular season with a two-game series at Creighton on May 5-6.
This year's BIG EAST Tournament will be played from May 10-12 in Chicago, Ill. The top four teams from the conference will qualify for the tournament.
