Philadelphia, Pa. -
Villanova graduate Brette Lawrence was named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team as announced on Wednesday evening. The team was voted on by the sports information directors of the Philadelphia area colleges and universities, and takes into account both academic and athletic achievements.
This is the second consecutive year that a Wildcat has been recognized on the Academic All-Area squad. In order to be considered for the honor, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or higher in addition to being a significant contributor to their teams.
Lawrence was selected to the NFCA Mideast Region Third Team after a stellar final season for the Wildcats, accumulating a 25-11 record on the mound with a 2.79 ERA.
She was earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and also earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team. With her 25 wins this year, Lawrence became the single-season wins leader at Villanova. She broke the previous mark of 23 set by Shannon Williams in 2005.
Lawrence also threw a perfect game this season, helping the Wildcats to an 8-0 win over St. John’s on April 23. She became the third Villanova softball player to achieve the feat, and she was named the Louisville Slugger NFCA Division I National Pitcher of the Week for her efforts.
The rest of the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team included Haley Broomell Becky Guinto and Jackie Schneider of Neumann, Widener’s Alexis Schengrund and Katie Sterling, Jackie Bilotti of Arcadia, Julie Foeldes of Penn State Brandywine, Lindsay Savar of Cabrini, and Holy Family’s Brianna Scotto. Broomell was named Academic All-Area Performer of the Year.
