Speicher and Verhoff earn all-academic honors.
May 14, 1999 On the GTE District II All-Academic softball team released on Thursday, May 13, two Wildcats garnered recognition. Along with the University of Maryland and Drexel University, Villanova University is one of three schools with two representatives. Junior outfielder/designated player Regina Speicher (Brackney, Pa./ Seton Catholic) and junior leftfielder Kristen Verhoff (Oakland, N.J./ Indian Hills) represented Villanova. Speicher, a mathematics major with a 3.81 G.P.A., started 47 of the team's 58 games this season. One of the Wildcat captains, the All-Big East performer was fourth on the team in batting average (.341), second in doubles (14), first in bases on balls (20), third in slugging percentage (.516), and third in on-base percentage (.440). A commerce & finance major with a 3.38 G.P.A., Verhoff started 56 games and had the best year of her career. Also one of the team's captains, Verhoff hit .308 with 39 runs batted in, the second best total on the team. She was second on the squad in home runs with three, and she was nearly flawless in the field, committing only one error all season. Both student-athletes are now awaiting word of whether or not they will make the GTE Academic All-American softball team.
