Player Focus Article - Regina Speicher
April 29, 2000
Entering her freshman year in college, there was speculation that Regina Speicher would never be able to run again. Her ankle had been shattered sliding into a catcher during a summer softball game. Although a pin in her ankle and visible scars from the steel rods used to hold the ankle together still remain, Speicher has overcome her injury and can he found running around the bases at any Villanova softball game. A native of the rural town of Brackney, PA, and the valedictorian of Seton Catholic Central in Binghamton, NY, Regina adds a tremendous feeling to the team. Former teammate and sister Kathy Speicher states, "She definitely brings humor. She can both make jokes and laugh at herself when others make fun of her. She is also one of the most determined people I know, and her presence on the team raises the level of determination for the entire team. If she makes an error, you know the next ball hit to her will be an out." This work ethic earned Regina a spot on the All Big East First Team last season. With stats like, it is easy to see the intricate role Regina plays on our team. When asked about Speicher, current teammate Mia Brickhouse replies, "Bring the big bomb in a small package. It takes a strong, unique person to persevere as much as #4 has, both on and off the field. Not many have done it, not may will." Molly Hanneman adds, "Not only does Regina have a strong bat, but her attitude brings life to our team!" It's easy to see the level of respect Regina garners from her teammates. Coaches Maria DiBernardi and Linda Goss feel the same way. "She is one of the batters that you hope is up when the game is on the line, because you know she wants to in the box at that time." Years ago, doctors said she may never be the same. It's a guarantee that a few years down the road, Villanova Softball won't be the same without Regina Speicher.
