VILLANNOVA, Pa.--- Villanova freshman pitcher Keri Stoller (West Linn, Ore/ West Linn H.S.) was named the Big East Rookie-of-the-Week on Monday, March 30, for her outstanding play last week in helping lead the Wildcats to an 8-1 record. For the week, Stoller tallied a 2-0 record , allowing only six runs on 13 hits in 19 2/3 innings (2.14 ERA), striking out 17 while walking only six.
Against Seton Hall on March 28, Stoller carried a no hitter into the sixth inning before finally surrendering a hit. She finished the afternoon pitching six scoreless innings, giving up only one hit and two walks, and striking out one. Three days earlier against Monmouth on March 25, Stoller pitched five scoreless innings for one hit ball, walking two and striking out six.
For the season, Stoller is second on the Wildcats in victories with five and third on the squad in ERA at 1.75. In 52 innings this season, she has struck out 52 batters, while walking 11 and giving up only 35 hits. In Stoller's team-high 12 appearances, opponents are batting only .189 against her.
After the Wildcats began the 1998 season 1-4, they have won 16 of their last 19 thanks in large part to the outstanding pitching of Stoller and the rest of the Villanova staff who are holding opponents to 1.42 runs per game. The Wildcats now stand at 17-7 overall and 3-0 in the Big East, having won seven straight games. They will look to add to their winning streak on Wednesday, April 1, at Delaware against the Fighting Blue Hens at 2:30 p.m.
