Villanova, Pa. – The Villanova softball team will make the trip to Delaware on Tuesday afternoon to play a doubleheader against the Blue Hens. The first game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Villanova enters the twin bill on a two game winning streak with a 9-6 overall record. Delaware is 6-12 on the season, and the Blue Hens have won four straight games. Live stats are available for tomorrow's contests.
Head Coach Maria DiBernardi is in her 33rd season at Villanova. During her time on the Main Line, DiBernardi has compiled an 827-720-10 record. She picked up her 800th career victory last season in an 8-7 victory over St. John’s on April 2.
FOUR FOR O’DONNELL
Associate head coach Jessica O’Donnell returns for her fourth season on the Villanova coaching staff. O’Donnell aids DiBernardi with the day-to-day operations of the program, along with leading the infielders and catchers.
NEW COACH IN THE DUGOUT
Stephanie Sanders began her first season as an assistant coach with the team this year. Sanders spent last season as an assistant at Saginaw Valley State and is a 2015 graduate of Michigan State.
LAST TIME OUT
Villanova went 3-2 at the USF Under Armour Showcase, which took place from March 10-12. The Wildcats were scheduled to play four games last weekend at Towson, but the tournament was cancelled due to unplayable field conditions.
HANNA NAMED BIG EAST PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Lauren Hanna was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on March 13. She went 9-for-18 (.500) in the batter’s box at the USF Under Armour Showcase with a run and RBI. Hanna was 2-for-4 in games against Canisius and South Dakota State, and she recorded the only two Villanova hits in the matchup with Purdue. She also played a key role in the Wildcats’ victories against Monmouth and Yale, going 1-for-4 with a RBI and 2-for-3 with a run scored, respectively.
LAWRENCE EARNS A SPOT ON THE BIG EAST WEEKLY HONOR ROLL
Brette Lawrence earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on March 13. She pitched three complete games and three scoreless innings in relief for Villanova at the USF Under Armour Showcase. Lawrence finished the weekend with a 3-1 record and 2.74 ERA.
Delaware is 6-12 on the season, but the Blue Hens have won four games in a row. Delaware last played in the UNC Greensboro Spartan Classic, which took place from March 10-12. The Blue Hens won all four of their games against Campbell (2), UNC Greensboro and Winthrop. At the plate, Delaware is led by Anna Steinmetz. She has played in all 18 games this season and is batting .375 on the year with 21 hits, 14 RBIs, nine runs and five home runs. Taylor Curran, Jordan Cargile and Kat Morris have seen significant time on the mound. Curran has appeared in 10 games, making one start. Cargile has started in nine games with 17 appearances overall, and Morris has made seven starts in 12 appearances.
FOUR IS THE MAGIC NUMBER
Villanova is 7-0 this season when scoring four or more runs and 2-6 when scoring less than four runs. The Wildcats are also 9-0 when tied or leading after six innings and 0-6 when trailing after six innings.
TAKING A LOOK AT THE STATS
Lauren Hanna leads the team in batting average at .375. She has 18 hits, seven runs and six RBIs on the season. Nikki Alden has a .371 batting average and leads the team with 14 RBIs. On the hill, Brette Lawrence has the top ERA on the team at 2.15. She is 7-3 on the year and has struck out 57 batters.
The Wildcats will play their first home games of the year when they host Rider for a doubleheader on Thursday at the Villanova Softball Complex. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
