VILLANOVA, Pa.- Villanova sophomore pitcher Carrie Walpole (Miami, Fla./ Ransom Everglades) was named Big East Pitcher-of-the-Week on Monday, March 16, for her outstanding performance in helping lead the Wildcats to a 9-6 record during their spring break trip to Ft. Myers, Fla., on Feb. 27 through March 8.
Walpole finished the trip with a 4-0 record and a 0.47 ERA in helping Villanova win eight of its last 10 games after a 1-4 start. Pitching in 29.2 innings, she surrendered only two runs on 16 hits, striking out 33 batters while walking eight. Making six appearances, five of which were starts, Walpole held opponents to a .154 batting average, tallying three complete game shutouts in the process.
On March 6, Walpole pitched a no hitter against LaSalle in Villanova's 4-0 victory, striking out four without walking a batter. One day later against Slippery Rock, she tied the Wildcat single game strikeout record with 14, once again pitching a complete game shutout.
The Villanova single game strikeout mark of 14 was originally set by 1996 graduate Tina Sabunas on April 27, 1993 against Lafayette.
Walpole and the Villanova softball team resume their schedule on Wednesday, March 18, at the University of Pennsylvania against the Quakers at 2:30 p.m.
