Garboden Earns Big East Softball Weekly Honor
March 16, 1999 Villanova, Pa. --- Freshman first baseman Heather Garboden (Beaverton, Ore./ Beaverton) is this week's Big East Softball Rookie of the Week. In Villanova's two games this past week, Garboden hit .333 (2-for-6) and had an on-base percentage of .429 (including one HBP). Her biggest moment of the week came in Villanova's 5-4 eight-inning victory over Colgate University in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader when the rookie came up huge with the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the eighth. Garboden raised her season batting average to .324 and increased her RBI total to 14, second on the team, in helping 9-3 Villanova to 5-4 and 8-2 wins on Saturday. With Garboden taking the honors this week, it marks the second time in as many weeks of the award in 1999 that a Villanova first-year player has won; last week, freshman outfielder Molly Hanneman (Salem, Ore./ Jesuit) was the winner.
