VILLANOVA, Pa.--The last of four regular season tournaments comes up this weekend for Villanova, which returns to action at the Delaware Spring Invitational starting on Friday afternoon. During the first three weeks of the season the Wildcats played in tournaments in Florida, where they won eight games while showing a great amount of potential for the season.
Villanova opens the Delaware tournament by facing Hartford on Friday at 3:45 p.m., while the Wildcats will also have a single game on Saturday when they face St. Francis (Pa.) at 11:15 a.m. Villanova wraps up the weekend with a doubleheader on Sunday, facing Norfolk State at 11:15 a.m. and the host Blue Hens in the tournament finale at 3:45 p.m.
One of the main story lines of the season for the Wildcats thus far has been the pitching of freshman Kate Poppe (Downingtown, Pa.), who has registered all eight of the team's victories while compiling a 1.29 ERA and 77 strikeouts in 65.0 innings pitched. She is holding opponents to a .201 batting average against her and has already recorded seven complete games.
Senior catcher Amanda Marquez (Miami, Fla.) has been the focal point of a potent Villanova offense and is batting a team high .417 (15-for-36) with a .611 slugging percentage, while reaching base safely in all 13 games that she has played. Marquez is one of four everyday players hitting .300 or better for the Wildcats, who are batting .275 as a team.
Villanova has been recognized for its accomplishments early in the season with two players named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll on two separate occasions. Following the opening weekend of the season Poppe and Marquez were each selected to the honor roll, while Poppe and sophomore second baseman Briana Fujii (San Jose, Calif.) received the honor this past week.
