Softball Looking to Continue Success Down at UCF

The Wildcats (4-1) are headed back to Florida, only this time to participate in the UCF Spring Fling Tournament in Orlando, Fla. Villanova will play five games throughout the course of the weekend and are looking to carry over their winning power from last weekend. Fans can keep up with the `Cats through the UCF Tournament Central page. Villanova is coming off a strong performance form last weekend by multiple team members, both offensively and defensively.
Top Performers at FGCU Tournament
Amanda Marquez (Miami, Fla.) and Kate Poppe (Downingtown, Pa.) were named to the BIG EAST's Honor Roll for their play at the FGCU Tournament. Marquez led the team with a .933 slg% and a .467 batting average (7-for-15), including two homeruns and a double. She also registered 47 putouts and a .926 fld% behind the plate. In Poppe's first collegiate game she maintained a no-hitter through six innings and was one strikeout away from tying a school record for most strike-outs in a game with 15 in the opening game versus Albany. Poppe finished the weekend with a 4-0 record, .74 era, only giving up 12 hits and five runs.
Beth Smetana (San Diego, Calif.) proved once again as one of the Wildcats most valuable hitters with two homeruns, two doubles and a team-high six RBIs in last weekend's tournament. Valerie Ortega (Ventura, Calif.) led the team with eight hits, including a double, over her five games played at FGCU. Ortega also maintained a 1.000 fld% at first base.
