PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior co-captain Amanda Marquez and rookie pitcher Kate Poppe have both been named to the BIG EAST's Weekly Honor Roll as announced by the conference Monday morning. Marquez led the Wildcats (4-1) with a .467 batting average (7-for-15), while Poppe had a stellar weekend at the FGCU tournament, racking up all four of Villanova's wins with a .74 ERA and 39 strikeouts.
Marquez (Miami, Fla.) led the team offensively throughout the weekend, notching two homeruns, a double and three RBI's. She also had the team's highest batting average of .467 in 15 at bats. Marquez earned a .933 slugging percentage and a .556 on-base percentage through five games at the FGCU tournament. Defensively, she notched 47 putouts and finished the weekend with a .926 fielding percentage behind the plate.
Poppe (Downingtown, Pa.) made her first collegiate career start against Albany where she maintained a no-hitter through six innings. In that game, she was one strikeout away from tying a school record for strikeouts in a single game as she knocked off 15 batters. Over the course of the weekend, Poppe faced 85 batters and only gave up 12 hits and five runs.
The conference also named DePaul's Allie Braden, Pittsburgh's Holly Stevens and Providence's Sarah Kitterman to the Honor Roll list. Notre Dame's Emilee Koerner was selected as the BIG EAST Player of the Week and Louisville's Caralisa Connell was named as the conference's Pitcher of the Week.
Marquez, Poppe and the rest of the Wildcats return to action this Friday, March 1st, when they take on Middle Tennessee State in their first game of the UCF Spring Fling Tournament in Orlando, Fla.
