VILLANOVA, Pa.- Senior shortstop Ali Lowe, sophomore outfielder Shea Palmer and sophomore pitcher Kate Poppe have been named to the Madness 2014 BIG EAST Preseason All-Conference Teams as announced by the staff at College Sports Madness Tuesday afternoon.

All three Wildcats were recognized as part of the Second Team all-league and marks the first time in their careers the honorees have been mentioned by any preseason list.

Lowe will enter the season at the team's co-captain in her fourth year as the starting shortstop for Villanova. Last season, the West Palm Beach, Fla. native finished with a team-high 26 runs scored and three triples. An offensive machine, she also finished second on the squad in four different offensive categories, including games started (51), at-bats (158), batting average (.304) and stolen bases (6).

Palmer tuned in an outstanding freshman campaign serving as the starting center fielder. Last season, the Scottsdale, Ariz. product led the team with seven stolen bases, finished second with 25 runs scored and third with a .296 batting average. Her dynamic speed and ability to get on base propelled her to the top of the lineup as the leadoff hitter by the end of the year.

Poppe will return to the mound as the Wildcats ace after breaking the single season record for innings pitched with 237 2/3 innings a year ago. In 2013, the freshman phenom concluded her inaugural season 19-23 with a 2.56 ERA, including 20 complete games, five shutouts, 256 strikeouts, while holding opponents to a .225 batting average. Against Lafayette, Poppe struck out a school record 20 batters on her way to becoming the ninth player in school history to throw a no-hitter.

Villanova will open its season Feb. 21 in Ft. Myers, Fla. when the Wildcats take on five opponents over three days at the Florida Gulf Coast University Tournament.
