Box Score

SALEM, VA.----- Villanova pitcher Theresa Hornick (Edmonds, Wash.) had a no-hitter through five innings of play, but Virginia Tech rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth and went on to defeat the Wildcats, 3-0, at the 2002 Big East Championships in Salem, Va.

Virginia Tech's leadoff batter Carmen Farmer (Richmond, Va.) led off the sixth inning with a walk and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Mindi Wylie (Surrey, B.C.). The Hokies catcher, Amy Voorhees (Oak Harbor, Wash.), broke up Hornick's no hit bid with a single up the middle allowing Farmer to score the first run of the game.

Virginia Tech head coach Scot Thomas elected to pinch-run Erin Lawrence (Arlington, Vt.) for Voorhees. Clarisa Crowell (Waldorf, Md.) kept the Hokies rally alive with a single to left field. Both Lawrence and Crowell advanced on a ground out to shortstop setting up a second and third situation for designated player Megan Evans (Mansfield, Pa.). Evans delivered with a two-RBI double to right center field scoring both runners. With Evans' double, Virginia Tech set a school record for doubles in a season (94).

Freshman Shannon Williams (Allentown, Pa.) relieved Hornick in the sixth and ended the Hokies rally.

The Wildcats were unable to put together a rally in the bottom seventh despite a single from freshman Krissy Yauch (Tucson, Ariz.).

Virginia Tech pitcher Ashlee Dobbe (N. Vancouver, B.C.) stifled the Wildcat bats early and often. Dobbe managed to strike out seven consecutive batters including striking out the side in the third and fourth innings. Dobbe (30-11) finished the game with 11 strikeouts and only one walk while allowing only four hits.

Hornick (22-9) pitched 5.2 innings, allowed three runs on three hits, and was credited with the loss.

Villanova will now play the winner of the Syracuse-Notre Dame match-up later today at 5:00 p.m.
