April 28, 2009
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova softball team dropped a doubleheader to cross-town foe St. Joseph's on Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats (22-25) fell 3-0 in game one before dropping a 2-1 mark in the nightcap.
St. Joe's posted two runs in the top of the fourth inning and added an additional run in the top of the fifth.
Freshman Caitlyn Delahaba threw a complete game allowing five hits, but struck out eight batters.
In the nightcap, it was the Wildcats who got on the scoreboard first in the second inning, as Teague singled and stole second. Botkins struck out swinging, but the catcher dropped the ball and Teague was able to advance to third base. Freshman Tessa Braga launched a single into left field for Villanova's first run of that day and a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks took the lead in the top of the fifth inning on a two RBI double that put them in front, 2-1.
Braga got a lead off walk in the bottom of the fifth and moved to second on a groundout. Senior Jackie Dempsey reached first on an error from the Hawks, but in a tough play, Braga was thrown out at home and unable to tie the game.
The Wildcats threatened in the bottom of the seventh as St. Joe's committed two errors to put runners on base, but could not get any runs in as they fell 2-1.
Morese, Teague and Braga each posted one hit in the nightcap.
The Wildcats will close out the 2009 season by hosting Temple in doubleheader action on Thursday, April 30. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
