Villanova, Pa.---Traveling to South Bend, Ind. on Saturday, April 25, for a doubleheader against Big East Southern Division leader Notre Dame, the Villanova softball team got swept by the Fighting Irish, by the scores of 11-0 and 7-4. With the two losses, the Wildcats record drops to 34-16 overall and 8-5 in the Big East Conference.
In game one, Notre Dame jumped put to an early lead scoring nine runs in the first inning. The Fighting Irish then shut down the Villanova offense behind pitchers Jennifer Sharron and Kelly Nichols and scored two more runs in the fourth inning to beat the Wildcats 11-0. In the loss, senior Jessica DeLuca went one-for-three.
Down 3-1 in game two, Villanova scored two runs in the third innings to tie up the game at 3-3 . Notre Dame proved too strong, however, scoring one run in the fourth and three more in the fifth inning to take a 7-4 victory. Keri Stoller started on the mound for the Wildcats and took the loss, pitching four and two-thirds innings and surrendering five earned runs on nine hits. Leading the Villanova offense was DeLuca who went three-for-four with three runs scored and sophomore Megan O'Leary who went one-for-four with a double and three RBI.
The Wildcats will resume Big East play tomorrow, Sunday, April 26, as they once again face off against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame at 12 p.m.
