Final Stats

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Alexis Switenko's second-inning home run propelled the Syracuse softball team (24-15, 9-3) to a 1-0 victory versus Villanova (31-21, 5-7) in the first game of a doubleheader at the SU Softball Stadium on Friday, April 22. The Wildcats rebounded to win game two, 10-2 in six innings.

Switenko's home run was her fifth of the season. It was all the offense freshman pitcher Erin Downey (14-6) needed as she threw her fourth shutout of the season. Downey scattered six hits and struck out seven. She is now 7-1 in BIG EAST play. Shannon Williams took the loss for the Wildcats despite allowing only three hits and striking out nine.

The SU offense managed nine hits in the doubleheader. Tanya Rose and Erin Gray were the only Orange players with two hits on the day. They both drove in runs in the game-two loss.

In game one, Switenko led off the second inning with the solo shot to center field. The Orange mustered just two hits the rest of the game, a single by Gray in the second and a double by Melissa Kelly in the third.

The Wildcats had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth. A single and a double put runners on second and third with just one out. SU gave up an intentional walk to load the bases and the next batter hit into a force play at home plate. Downey escaped the inning by inducing a ground ball to shortstop to end the threat.

The Villanova offense came alive in game two with 10 runs and 11 hits. Courtney Mosch (9-9) suffered the loss for Syracuse. She lasted one-third of an inning and allowed four runs on three hits. Downey pitched five and two-thirds innings of relief, giving up six runs, five of which were earned, on eight hits. Williams (17-11) got the win for the Wildcats. She started and went four and one-third innings, giving up just one run on three hits.

Kari Koller and Allie Wisniewski struck the big blows for the Wildcats in game two with a three-run home run each. Wisniewski hit her long ball in the first inning to give Villanova a 4-0 lead. Koller's three-run shot in the sixth made it a 10-1 game. Cassie Koenig drove in two runs on three hits, while Sheri Donley picked up an RBI on two hits.

The Orange scored a single run in the third inning on an RBI single by Rose. Gray drove in the second run in the bottom of the sixth with a single through the left side.

SU's game-two loss snapped a school-record six-game BIG EAST winning streak. Despite the setback, the Orange has already matched its conference win total from a season ago.

Syracuse will try to rebound on Sunday, April 24 versus Rutgers at 12 p.m. It will mark the final home appearance for Orange seniors Jaime Grillo, Katie Kaempfer, Kelly, Shawna Norris, Tiffany Robinson and Rose.
