SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.----- The Villanova softball team (38-9 overall, 9-3 Big East) defeated the Seton Hall Pirates (23-13 overall, 8-6 Big East) in a crucial Big East two game series in South Orange, N.J., on Saturday, April 20. Behind the hitting of freshman Allison Wisniewski (Smithtown, N.Y.) and stellar pitching of junior Theresa Hornick (Edmonds, Wash.), Villanova captured a 3-0 victory in game one followed by a 2-1 win in game two to sweep the Pirates. Wisniewski hit her first career home run in game one and delivered a clutch RBI single in game two to lead the Wildcats at the plate, while Hornick pitched 13 of the 14 innings earning two victories and improving to 17-6 on the year.

Game #1:VILLANOVA 3, Seton Hall 0
In the second inning of game one, Villanova capitalized on the Pirates only error of the day by scoring one run. After senior Heather Garboden (Beaverton, Ore.) led off with a single and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt, freshman Sarah Wall (Hollywood, Fla.) singled to left field. With two outs, an error by the Seton Hall shortstop allowed Ricci Lugo (San Clemente, Calif.) to reach safely and Garboden to score the Wildcats first run.

Winiewski's first home run as a Wildcat came with one out in the top of the seventh inning and one runner on base. Her first career blast pushed Villanova's lead to 3-0.

Freshman Kristen Haynes (Fairfax, Calif.) relieved Hornick in the seventh inning and closed the door on the Pirates to earn her third save of the season. Hornick scattered seven hits in six complete innings while striking out seven. Haynes' save is the ninth save of the season for the Villanova pitching staff setting a new single-season record.

Game #2: VILLANOVA 2, Seton Hall 1
Trailing 1-0 after three complete innings, the Wildcats once again received timely hitting from Wisniewski. Sophomore Lisa Krueger (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led off with a double center field. Sara Carlson (Langley, B.C.) followed with a single and advanced to second on a stolen base setting up a second and third situation. Wisniewski then tied the score at 1-1 with an RBI-single to second base allowing Krueger to score for her third RBI of the day. Despite loading the bases with no outs, Seton Hall's Meghan Meyer (Vermilion, Ohio) pitched out of the jam striking out two and forcing a ground out to end the threat.

Villanova scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on an RBI single to center field by Wall scoring Haynes. Wall's game-winning hit was her ninth RBI of the season.

Hornick pitched a complete game in the nightcap allowing one earned run on five hits. The Pirates only run came in the bottom of the second inning when Seton Hall's Tracey Myhren (Lake Hopatcong, N.J.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Villanova will travel to Jamaica, N.Y. for another Big East double-header on Sunday, April 21, with St. John's. The first game will begin at 12:00 p.m.
