BETHLEHEM, PA. - The Villanova softball team came from behind in game two and scored the game winning run on a passed ball in the eighth inning for a 3-1 victory over Lehigh amidst windy conditions in Bethlehem, Pa. The Wildcats dropped game one, 3-0, and now own a 19-14 record on the season.
The pair of games with the Mountain Hawks was originally scheduled for Wednesday, Apr. 14 at the Villanova Softball Field, but was changed to Thursday at Lehigh because of the same rainstorms that forced the cancellations of four games earlier this week.
Lehigh jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Kristen Haynes in game two when Kelly Kliewer drove in Erin Hengemuhle in the second inning. But Haynes settled down and worked all eight innings, allowing the lone second inning run on six hits, walking one and striking out seven. The junior right-hander improved to 6-6 on the season.
The Wildcats tied it in the fourth when Ricci Lugo scored an unearned run on a double steal, and then both offenses stalled until the eighth. Lindsey Martin came home on a passed ball for the game-winner, and Lugo singled home Robin Flier for an insurance run.
Reigning Big East and ECAC pitcher of the week Shannon Williams took the loss in game one to drop to 13-8, as the Mountain Hawks scored three times, on a fielder's choice in the third, and a home run and RBI single in the sixth. 'Nova managed just five hits and no runs off Lehigh's Heather Hamasaki.
Flier went 3-for-7 on the day to stretch her current hitting streak to 10 games. Flier and the 'Cats return home for four Big East contests this weekend, Saturday against Boston College and Sunday against Connecticut. Game time for both days is noon.
