CHICAGO, Ill. - The Villanova softball team dropped two games to no. 22/25 DePaul on Saturday afternoon at Caccitore Stadium in Chicago, Ill. The Wildcats fell 8-0 in six innings in the first stanza and 6-2 in the second game. Game two was called in the top of the sixth inning after a 30-minute rain delay. `Nova had one runner on third with no outs.

Villanova (14-16-1, 3-7) had three hits in the first game. Sophomore Danielle Maricle hit a lead-off double as the first batter and junior Meghan Morese reached on an error. Sophomore Jess O'Boyle reached on a fielder's choice, but she and Maricle were stranded as the inning ended.

Morese singled up the middle in the top of the fourth for the `Cats' second hit of the day and freshman Becky LaMarca singled in the fifth inning.

DePaul was quiet until the fourth inning when they scored two runs. The Blue Demons exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game early.

In the second frame, DePaul wasted no time, earning a run in the first inning, taking the early 1-0 lead.

Villanova made noise in the third inning. Maricle knocked a lead-off homer into left field, to get the `Cats on the board, closing in at 3-1. Morese followed with a single to left field and Eryn Teague moved her with a single into centerfield. Freshman Allie Heon reached on an error to load the bases for Villanova. O'Boyle hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Morese and close in further at 3-2.

The Blue Demons scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and the top of the fifth increasing the lead to 6-2.

In the bottom of the sixth inning Heon was walked and moved to third on back-to-back wild pitches. With no one out, the game was called following a 30-minute rain delay.

 

 

Villanova heads to Notre Dame on Sunday to take on the Irish in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m. CT.
