ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Senior pitcher Shannon Williams (Macungie, Pa.) threw 10 strikeouts en route to her 14th victory of the season and freshman Jackie Dempsey (Lexington, Mass.) scored two runs as Villanova (25-17) defeated Lehigh (27-7), 5-3, in the first game of a double header on Tuesday afternoon at Patriots Park. Lehigh then went on to win the second game, 8-0, in six innings.
The Wildcats scored first in the top of the third inning as Dempsey led off with a single to center field. She advanced to second when teammate Krissy Yauch (Tucson, Ariz.) popped up to the catcher, and then advanced to third on a passed ball, and then scored as Villanova took a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth inning, senior Allie Wisniewski (Smithtown, N.Y.) led off with a single to right field and then freshman Greta Holmgren (Somerdale, N.J.) came in to pinch run. Sophomore Sheri Donley (Orange, Calif.) reached on an error by Lehigh's first baseman, allowing Holmgren to advance to second. Another passed ball allowed each runner to advance a base, leaving Villanova with runners on second and third. Sophomore Lindsey Martin (Sammamish, Wash.) reached on a fielders' choice and the next batter, freshman Lisa Curran (Las Vegas, Nev.), singles to score Holmgren. Donley would then score the second run of the inning when senior Veronica Alvarez (Miami, Fla.) grounded out to allow Donley to reach home safely. When the inning was over, Villanova led, 3-0.
The Mountain Hawks scored one run in the fourth inning off a sacrifice fly to cut the Wildcats' lead to two.
The sixth inning brought two more runs across the plate for Villanova, as Martin drew a walk and then stole second. Dempsey came in with a single and another stolen base and Yauch's single would drive Dempsey in for her second run of the afternoon.
Lehigh scored its last two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, both unearned runs, as Mary Wieder's triple drove in two.
Williams pitched five complete innings, and in addition to her 10 strikeouts, did not walk anyone. Freshman Kat Walsh (Los Angeles, Calif.) pitched two innings in relief with one walk and three hits.
Senior Kristen Haynes (Fairfax, Calif.) started in the circle for Villanova during game two.
Lehigh scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning as Weider's double scored two.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Mountain Hawks scored three runs in an inning that saw two pitching changes. The game was over in the sixth when Lehigh's lead increased to eight as they out hit Villanova 11-2.
Offensively, senior Lisa Krueger (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and Donley each came up with a hit, but Villanova was unable to advanced past second.
The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday when they head across town to face Penn at 3 p.m.
