VILLANOVA, Pa.--- Hosting Drexel University for a doubleheader at the Villanova Softball Field on Tuesday, April 7, the Villanova softball team swept the Dragons, winning each contest by a 4-0 margin. With the day's two victories, the Wildcats' record now stands at 22-12 on the season.
In game one, seniors Brenda Roach and Jen Cornelius combined to shutout Drexel on four hits. Roach (6-1) got the victory, pitching five and one-third innings and allowing only three hits while striking out one. Cornelius relieved Roach in the sixth and pitched the final one and two-thirds innings allowing just one hit, to seal the victory.
The Wildcats first got on the board in the second inning as freshman Gina Defrancesco walked with the bases loaded. Senior Jessica DeLuca then reached on an error, scoring fellow senior Kelly Sparks to give Villanova a 2-0 lead after two innings. The Cats put the game out of reach in the fourth inning, as sophomores Regina Speicher and Mia Brickhouse each contributed RBI singles to make the game 4-0.
In game two, Villanova once again received outstanding pitching performances as Cornelius and freshman Keri Stoller shutout the Dragons. Cornelius hurled four innings for her fourth victory of the season (4-2), surrendering only two hits while striking out two. Stoller came on in the fifth and pitched the final three innings, striking out three and allowing only two hits and three walks.
On offense for the Wildcats, seniors Kelli McCoy and Stacey Stack each went two-for-three on the afternoon with a run scored. Speicher and Defrancesco contributed again like they did in game one, as each had one RBI in the contest.
Villanova will resume Big East Conference play on Wednesday, April 8, as they play host to the Rutgers Scarlet Knights for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
