Softball Rebounds with Two-Game Sweep of West Chester

April 2, 1998

After getting swept in two games by Delaware a day earlier, the Villanova softball team rebounded by sweeping a doubleheader from West Chester on Thursday, April 2, by the scores of 10-2 and 6-2. With the victories, the Wildcats improved their record to 19-9 on the season.

In game one, Villanova broke out early scoring four runs in the first, two in the second and four again in the third, to lead 10-1 after three innings of play. The Wildcats led by the pitching of sophomore Carrie Walpole and senior Brenda Roach shut down the Golden Rams and came out with a 10-2 victory. Walpole started and pitched the first three innings to get her seventh win, giving up only one unearned run on one hit, while striking out five and walking four. Roach relieved Walpole in the fourth and pitched two innings of one-run ball to seal the victory.

Leading the Wildcats' offensive bombardment were sophomores Megan O'Leary and Regina Speicher. O'Leary went two-for-three on the afternoon with three RBI, while Speicher also went two-for-three with three RBI and hit the game's only homerun. Adding to the Cats charge was senior Stacey Stack who went a perfect two-for-two with a triple and two RBI.

Villanova got off to a quick start once again in game two scoring two in the first, and did not look back as they sailed on to a 6-2 vicotry. Senior Jen Cornelius pitched four shutout innings to get the win, striking out three while walking only one. Freshman Keri Stoller gave up two runs in three innings of relief to get the save.

One of the Wildcats game one heros, Megan O'Leary, was outstanding once again in game two as she went two-for-three with a game-high two RBI. Senior Jessica DeLuca and sophomore Mia Brickhouse also helped lead the Villanova cause. DeLuca had two hits and two stolen bases, while Brickhouse had a stolen base and scored three of the Wildcats' six runs.

Villanova will hit the road to resume their Big East schedule, as they will travel to Boston College and Providence this weekend. The Wildcats will face the Eagles on Saturday, April 4 at 12 p.m., and the Friars on Sunday, April 5 at 12 p.m.
