Coming into the doubleheader with a seven-game winning streak, the Villanova softball team lost two one-run contests to the Delaware Blue Hens on Wednesday, April 1, by the scores of 1-0 and 2-1. With the losses, the Wildcats record drops to 17-9 on the season.
Game one was a pitcher's dual, with Wildcat freshman pitcher Keri Stoller holding the Hens scoreless for six innings. In the seventh inning, however, Bonita Seaman led off the inning with a single off Stoller. After moving to third on two straight groundouts, Chris Brady came to the plate and singled home Seaman to give Delaware a 1-0 victory.
Delaware scored the first two runs of the contest in game two, but Villanova would not surrender as they scored one in the third to narrow the Hens lead to 2-1. Trying to complete their rally in the seventh inning, Wildcat sophomore Melissa Crombet stood at the plate with runners at first and third and one out. Crombet, however, grounded to Delaware shortstop Carolyn Wasilewski who threw to first for the second out, before firstbaseman Erin Kelly threw to home to gun out Villanova freshman Gina DeFrancesco for the final out of the game.
Villanova will resume their schedule on Thursday, April 2, at West Chester University at 2:30 p.m.
