VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova softball team increased their winning streak to seven games, defeating the Seton Hall Pirates 3-1 on Sunday, March 29, at the Villanova softball field. With the victory, the Wildcats swept their three-game weekend series over Seton Hall, improving their record to 17-7 overall and 3-0 in the Big East.
After two basehits put runners second and third with only one out in the first inning, Wildcat sophomore Megan O'Leary came to the plate and hit a three-run homerun to leftfield giving Villanova a quick 3-0 lead.
The game proved to be a pitchers dual throughout the remainder of the contest. Villanova senior pitcher Brenda Roach started for the Cats and picked up the win, pitching five and one-third scoreless innings, striking out three and giving up only three hits and one walk. Freshman Keri Stoller came on to relieve Roach in the sixth inning, striking out two batters.
In the seventh inning, however, the Pirates scored their first run of the game off Stoller, on an RBI single by junior Shye Nakabayashi. With a runner on first and the tying run at the plate for the Pirates, Villanova senior Jennifer Cornelius came on to get the save, retiring the next two batters in order.
The offensive star of the afternoon for the Wildcats was O'Leary, who finished three-for-three with a double, homerun and three RBI. Seniors Kelly Sparks and Kelli McCoy were also outstanding contributing two hits apiece.
The Wildcats will resume their schedule on Wednesday, April 1, traveling to Delaware to face the Blue Hens at 2:30 p.m.
