NEWARK, Del. - Despite a dominant outing by pitcher Kate Poppe, the Villanova softball team falls 1-0 to Robert Morris Sunday afternoon in game one of its doubleheader at the Delaware Invitational. The Wildcats move to 7-12 on the season and 1-2 during the tournament.
Colonials pitcher Nicole Sleith blanked the Wildcats attack all afternoon and did not allow a single hit during her eight inning complete game no-hitter. Sleith fanned eight and surrendered only one walk to Ali Lowe in the fifth.
Ace Poppe matched Sleith pitch for pitch until giving up her first hit in the bottom of the seventh. Lauren Hackett then drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. The sophomore would buckle down and get the next two batters to strikeout and fly out to send the game to extras.
Due to extra inning rules, Robert Morris would be placed on second to begin the bottom half of the eighth. Jordan Gurganus singled up the middle to drive in the only run of the game and register the walk off win.
Poppe drops to 5-7 after allowing one run, unearned on two hits with five strikeouts in seven innings on the bump.
Villanova will conclude its tournament schedule against Delaware later today. First pitch is slated for 3:45 p.m.
