CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Wildcats (7-7) came away with their seventh victory of the season against UT Chattanooga at the USF Under Armour Showcase. Briana Fujii led the team offensively with three hits, while Ali Loweregistered a double in the win.

Villanova got on the scoreboard in the top of the inning with a hit from Sierra McConnell (Katy, Texas) and Briana Fujii (San Jose, Calif.) put Beth Smetana(San Diego, Calif.) in position to cross the plate. Smetana and Fujii notched got a piece of the ball and notched hits in the top of the fourth inning. The Wildcats were able to capitalize off a bases loaded situation and bring Smetana home to extend their lead to 2-0.

Smetana recorded her second hit of the game in the top of the fifth inning and a series of walks from the UT Chattanooga pitcher gave Villanova the chance to widen their lead at 3-0.

The Wildcats scored their fourth and final run of the game in the final inning of play. Ali Lowe(West Palm Beach, Fla.) doubled to left center and scored on a throwing error by UT Chattanooga. The Mocs notched one run in the bottom of the seventh, but the effort wouldn't be enough to catch the `Cats and Villanova would take the victory 4-1.

Villanova's defensive effort came up big in the victory and were able to halt the Mocs from getting on the scoreboard. Head Coach Maria DiBernardi commented, "It was a total team effort. We had some great defensive plays by Ali Lowe and Taylor Olafson that just shut down their offense completely. It was a fun game to watch and even more fun to win because they are a tough team."

Freshman pitcher Kate Poppe(Downingtown, Pa.) earned yet another win with eight strikeouts. She gave up six hits in her seven innings pitched. DiBernardi was happy with the freshman's tough performance in the win as she said, "Kate Poppe pitched a whale of a game. She has had a few games that she had struggled to find the zone but still pitched well enough to win those. But tonight she was on her game. All her pitches were working and she kept the batters off balance and guessing. Chattanooga is a very good team that won their conference last year and she handled them without a problem."

Villanova will conclude play at the USF Under Armour Showcase when they take on Boston University at 9 AM.
