CLEARWATER, Fla. - Villanova (6-7) fell to the South Carolina Gamecocks 4-1 in their third game of the USF Under Armour Showcase. The Wildcats were only managed to score one run in the sixth inning and registered three hits in the loss to the historically SEC powerhouse.
Kaity Sitzman (Tucson, Ariz.) served as Villanova's starting pitcher and struck out two batters in her six innings pitched.
Valerie Ortega(Ventura, Calif.) had the team's first hit in the top of the fourth inning, but she would end the inning stranded on base. The Wildcats held back South Carolina, but the Gamecocks struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning, producing a 2-0 lead.
Villanova gunned for a comeback in the top of the sixth inning, as Amanda Marquez (Miami, Fla.) and Briana Fujii(San Jose, Calif.) both recorded hits. Marquez was credited with an RBI, but the score would be Villanova's on run of the game.
South Carolina went on to score two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, and would finish the game with a 4-1 over the Wildcats. The Gamecocks had a 7-3 edge over Villanova in hits.
Despite the loss, Head Coach Maria DiBernardi liked the effort by Villanova against the historic SEC powerhouses. Once again, the Wildcats played a great defensive game, but a few mistakes led to USC's four scores. DiBernardi commented, "Kaity Sitzman pitched a very good game. I think we had them scoreless thru 4-5 innings and then a couple of defensive miscues broke open the game. That, followed by a seeing eye single opened the door for their four runs, but the team battled and just came up short in that game. But I was really proud of how well they played. We just lost to a very good team."
Villanova will continue play this afternoon at 4:45 when they take on UT Chattanooga.
