Villanova Softball Crushes Yale 10-0 in Five Innings
March 9, 2001 Orlando, FL - On Friday, March 9, in their second game of the day, the Villanova Wildcat softball team kept their winning streak alive by defeating Yale University 10-0 in five innings. With the victory, Villanova now stands at 6-0 on the season. All six of the victories have come over spring break down in Orlando, Florida. The Wildcats finish play in their season opening eight game spring break trip on Saturday, March 10, against St. Bonaventure at 11:00 a.m. and Fordham at 3:00 p.m.
In a game that was never close, Villanova's offense continued to prosper at the expense of opposing pitchers. Leading the offensive effort for the Wildcats were freshman Robin Flier (Lafayette, CA/Acalanes), Lisa Krueger (Mission Viejo, CA/Aliso Niguel), and senior Gina DeFrancesco (Ardmore, PA/Haverford). The trio combined for ten hits. Both Flier and Krueger accumulated four hits on the evening, tying Villanova's single game hit record. Flier smoked three singles and a triple and Krueger hammered out four singles. The duo are the 20th and 21st players to have tallied four hits in one game in Villanova history. The last being Wildcat teammate Sara Carlson (Langley, BC/H.D. Stafford) who tallied four hits against St. Joseph's in 2000.
DeFrancesco was also highly prolific at the plate. The senior shortstop went two for four on the evening, hitting two doubles and knocking in three runs. On the mound ensuring the victory were Theresa Hornick (Edmonds, Wash./Seattle Prep) and Kari Singley (Irvine, CA/Irvine). Hornick threw four innings of scoreless softball before yielding to Singley in the fifth inning. Singley also did not allow a run. With the win Hornick improves to 3-0 on the season and has allowed zero earned runs in the 19 innings she as pitched. She has allowed only one unearned run, which came against St. Joseph's in the second game of the season. Singley, who made her collegiate debut against Sacred Heart earlier in the day, has also not allowed a run. She has pitched two and two-thirds innings in closing the last two games.
